It has taken over five years, but the Office of Supervising Engineers for State Projects (OISOE) has begun to hand over areas of the giant Regional University Hospital José María Cabral y Báez to the doctors and staff. The latest area of the hospital that has been rebuilt, refurbished and remodeled is the area for medical consultations. There are 55 offices, an area for diabetics, another for minor surgeries, orthopedics, coronary patients, and a laboratory. The area covers around 8,000 square meters and even has a new parking lot.
The entire hospital is scheduled to be inaugurated at the end of May. So far, the North, East, and central wings have been completed, and in two weeks it is expected that the South wing will be finished as well. The South wing contains the areas of Intensive Care and post-operations. It will be two months before the West wing is completed, since this is the area that will contain the kitchens, laundry and sterilization areas, plus the MRI equipment and the treatment facility for medical waste. This entire project began in July of 2013, and has progressed by fits and spurts ever since.
