Osmar Benítez: Local produce is enough

Agriculture Minister Osmar Benítez said on Tuesday, 17 March 2020 that the country produces 976 million pounds of food every month, and this is enough to meet the demand of the basic consumer basket. Benítez reported on high stocks of rice, chicken, eggs, beef and pork, plantains, bananas, cassava, beans and milk.

“In other words, there is no reason to panic about the Coronavirus that could affect the supply of products in the family’s basic basket,” he told Hoy reporters.

The Minister of Agriculture stressed that food demand is guaranteed by more than 85% because of the local production. He said that Dominicans should not worry that the country may face food shortages now.

Economists have observed that there will indeed be a surplus of produce, with the shutdown of hundreds of hotels countrywide.
