Media and telecom cleared to continue operating

Presidency Minister Gustavo Montalvo says that telecommunications service providers, radio, television and written press stations may remain open during the state of emergency decreed by President Danilo Medina in response to the Covid-19 virus. The clarification was issued on Wednesday in a statement by the High Level Commission for the Prevention and Control of the Covid-19, headed by Minister Montalvo.

The Minister of the Presidency said that “it is vital that in these 15 days of the state of emergency, the population has access to both information and entertainment in their homes; that is why the companies that provide these services are exempt from the temporary closure that the others must comply with.”

While the Dominican Constitution allows for government to curtail freedom of press in the declaration of emergency, but legal advisor Flavio Dario Espinal sent a correction to the resolution indicating that freedom of press would not be limited.
