TSE imposes coercive measures against those accused of electoral crimes

The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) imposed coercive measures against two people accused of having committed electoral crimes. These include bribery to induce a vote in favor of a candidate and the alteration, forgery of ballots during the municipal elections of last Sunday, 15 March 2020.

The court, headed by TSE President Román Jaquez Liranzo, ordered Yeyson Arias Fernández to deposit a cash guarantee of RD$20,000. He was also ordered to report periodically to the Santiago Judicial District Attorney’s Office on the last Friday of each month.

Meanwhile, Obispo Figueroa Mieses was ordered to report periodically to the San Cristobal Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

This is a first time in recent electoral history that actions are taken to prosecute electoral crimes.

The country elected its first Electoral Prosecutor, Gisela Cueto after the failed 16 February 2020 municipal election.

The Justice Department announced the shutdown of hearings as of 19 March 2020 due to the Covid-19 virus.
