
The position of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) is that if the 17 May 2020 presidential and congressional election needs to be postponed due to the Covid-19 virus situation, the elections should always take place prior to the 16 August date for the inauguration of the new government. In an op-ed feature in El Dia, Orlando Jorge Mera, who is the PRM delegate to the Central Electoral Board (JCE) said that proposals for an extension of the present government of President Danilo Medina because of the crisis “is totally unacceptable.”
“To celebrate elections in times of a pandemic is not an easy task, but it cannot be seen as impossible, when reasonable measures are taken to protect people’s health and democracy,” he wrote.
