Shutdown of the Mercado Nuevo market in Santo Domingo

City Mayor David Collado announced the shutdown of the Mercado Nuevo at Av. Duarte. The fresh produce market had been in operation since 1973. Thousands of persons congregated there daily, making it a significant focus of infection of the Covid-19.

Mayor David Collado said the shutdown is part of the World Health Organization protocols the country is following to reduce the spread of the new coronavirus in the country.

He said the market would be closed for at least a week and intense sanitization efforts will be carried out. The government will carry out an evaluation before announcing the next steps.
