Transport kingpin Juan Hubieres considers that for the government to allow inter-urban private vehicle travel is “a perversity.” He criticized that the government relax inter-urban travel instated during Easter without the authorities having yet carried out the announced massive tests against Covid-19.
The coordinator of the High Commission for the Prevention of COVID-19, Gustavo Montalvo, announced on Monday, 13 April that the ban on inter-provincial travel off curfew hours was being lifted for private vehicles. Bus companies and other modes of public transport continue banned.
“I cannot believe that the government intentionally seeks to prolong the Covid-19 crisis, endangering the lives of thousands of Dominicans by not listening to the proposals of the various sectors of the country, including an authoritative voice such as the Dominican Medical Association,” Hubieres said.
Hubieres is the key officer and proprietor of Fenatrano, the public bus transporter. The transport service is suspended.
Hubieres also demanded that once the measure to lift public transport is taken, the government should provide or require that all bus workers and passengers be properly protected with masks and gloves to reduce the risk of spreading the disease.
