
Expert metalworker José Ignacio Morales passed away on 13 April 2020. He died from complications due to the coronavirus illness. He had run for mayor of La Romana in the 15 March 2020 municipal election. He ran for the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) but lost by a narrow margin to Tony Adames of the Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC).
Morales’ works can be seen all around La Romana. In Santo Domingo, he was responsible for the tall clock on Av. 27 de Febrero.
He was best known for his collective actions to help young people in the community learn the metalworking craft and succeed as artisans.
Morales learned the craft when working with Italian ironwork experts on construction of the Altos de Chavon in 1979. His extraordinary talent earned him the name of “El Artistico.”
On 9 March 2020, he had suffered a serious traffic accident, prior to catching the coronavirus.
