New Ministry of Defense Control Center to be used to fight Covid-19

President Danilo Medina visited the Ministry of Defense’s Command, Control, Communications, Computer, Cybersecurity and Intelligence Center (C5i). The Presidency says the facilities will be used for the combat against the coronavirus epidemic.

Medina supervised and received explanations from the executive director of the Emergency and Health Management Committee for Combating the Coronavirus, Dr. Amado Alejandro Baez, who explained the ways technology can be used to analyze data in real time and in a productive way to fight the disease. Baez is an expert on public health and disaster systems, mass emergencies and critical care.

Dr. Báez was recently named advisor to the Executive Branch on public health, disaster systems and mass emergencies and critical care. He was then named on 1 April to direct the newly created Emergency and Health Management Committee for the Fight against Coronavirus (Covid-19).

Baez says that the Ministry of Defense system is a pioneering facility in the region and will allow all the country’s surveillance and early warning systems to be connected in one place, including the Armed Forces, 911 Emergency System, the Center for Emergency Operations (COE) and all the government response institutions.

He says the new communications systems connect the Ministry of Public Health, the National Health System (SNS), the Ministry of Defense and the National Police in real time.

“We have gone from manual crisis management, with uncertainty, to something digital and objective,” says the Presidency of the Republic in one of the tweets published on the subject.
