Santiago Mayor-elect Abel Martinez says the implementation of a more effective plan to stop the coronavirus is urgently needed. Martínez, who in the 14 March election won his bid for reelection, hosted the “Santiago Covid-19 Contingency Meeting”, with the participation Sánchez Cárdenas, Dr. Alejandro Báez, advisor to the Executive Branch on public health and disaster systems, mass emergencies and critical care, Senator Julio César Valentín, and provincial Governor Ana María Domínguez.

Also present were representatives of Santiago’s business groups, directors of public and private health centers, universities, the military, police and representatives of civil society.

Martínez stressed the importance of the city as it is “the radius of action of the surrounding provinces.” He said people from all around the center of the country converge in Santiago seeking medical care. “We have to work in coordination to mitigate the situation Santiago is going through,” he said.

He said he is confident that if Santiago manages to structure a body of work with the participation of all sectors, this will serve as an example for the rest of the region to follow to curb the spread of the disease.
