A press release from the US Embassy in Santo Domingo says the funding is to support epidemiological analysis and forecasting, identification and follow-up of contact tracing, as well as pandemic surveillance.
This emergency humanitarian assistance will strengthen health care systems, protect the most vulnerable, and support the Dominican Republic’s efforts to combat the pandemic. Assistance for the Dominican Republic comes from funds from the State Department and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
“We are pleased that our assistance will be able to support the Dominican Republic during this pandemic,” said Deputy Chief of Mission Shane Myers. “We continue to be a strong partner of the Dominican Republic, especially in the area of health. The funding is aimed at stopping transmission of the coronavirus by strengthening health care systems, preparing laboratories and training medical workers. The US Embassy in Santo Domingo, via agencies like USAID and the CDC, have invested for years in the capacity-building, materials, and training of the health sector in order to be better prepared to combat pandemics.”
The US Embassy says that the United States has invested more than US$298 million in health assistance for the Dominican Republic. “This recent contribution of US$1.4 million is a comprehensive response from the people of the United States to reinforce the work of the Dominican Republic against Covid-19,” says the press release dated 17 April 2020.
