JCE says there will be change of government come 16 August

There is widespread speculation the slow expansion of the coronavirus in the Dominican Republic would impede the organization of the presidential and congressional election. President Danilo Medina’s term ends on 16 August.

Yet, on Monday, 20 April 2020, the president of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) Julio César Castaños Guzmán and judge Roberto Saladín rejected the speculation there would not be a change of government in time. They say the electoral body is working so there not be “a void of power” on 16 August, the constitutional date for change of government.

The JCE authorities said that the entity is working to have ready a health protocol that will guarantee the safety of voters and election officers. He said they will soon discuss this with the political party delegates.

The JCE announced a rescheduling of the presidential and congressional elections for 5 July. The election had originally been scheduled for 17 May. The JCE has been advancing on the calendar of activities needed to prepare for the election. The entity has said a new internet technology director will be named with the consensus of political parties.
