The leading opposition party, the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), announced that at the 104 city governments where PRM mayors will start on the job as of 24 April 2020, new leadership actions will be taken to combat the disease. The plan will be carried out together with central government authorities. City halls will be making available facial masks available without charge. The plan also covers the manufacture of masks by workshops in several communities. The party is also making available an increase in protective gear for health care workers.
Abinader said that Mayor Kelvin Cruz of La Vega had ordered the same workshops that make costumes for the carnival to undertake the effort to make health care protective outfits. “That is the spirit of solidarity and entrepreneurship of the Dominicans that will make us overcome this pandemic,” said Abinader.
The Municipal Emergency Plan includes establishing a strict sanitary protocol for the management of municipal markets and slaughterhouses, and a citizen education campaign so that the population of each municipality learns and assimilates living with the new sanitary protocols that will allow the country to return to normalcy.
In addition, special support and monitoring will be given to informal workers and to individuals or families who depend on small businesses.
“All these programs will be implemented in compliance with the strictest transparency, because our mayors will apply the model proposed by international organizations for all purchases and contracts and will involve civil society in the purchase committees,” said Abinader.
