
The effects of the change in leadership in city governments nationwide are yet to be seen. A stay at home order and curfew limits the hours citizens have to get about their essential needs.
The reality is that the opposition political party, the Modern Revolutionary Party obtained 40.46% of the vote in the municipal election. The ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) grabbed but 33.66% of the vote in the 15 March 2020 election. The new city authorities begin their four-year terms on 24 April 2020 in these coronavirus times.
The PRM won 52% de las city governments and in 26 of the 38 larger municipalities.
The political expectations of the country are nevertheless set on the change of command that will take place in the mayors’ offices and municipal districts.
The Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) obtained 1,432,414 votes in mayoral offices and 294,839 in municipal districts for a total of 1,727,553 votes and 40.76%. PRM now leads the number of mayoralties with 81 while PLD controls 65 city governments. The Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) won 1,129,807 votes in mayoral offices and 296,591 in municipal districts for a total of 1,426,398 votes and 33.66%.
The Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) won 143,429 votes for its mayors and 43,036 in municipal districts for a total of 186,465 and 4.40%.
The Christian Social Reformist Party (PRSC) received 123,548 votes in mayoral offices and 34,569 in municipal districts for 3.73%.
The People’s Force of former President Leonel Fernández obtained 118,572 votes in mayoral candidates and 26,168 in municipal districts for 144,740 and 3.42%.
The mayors of Santiago and La Vega repeat in the positions. But there will be new mayors in the National District, Santo Domingo East, Santo Domingo West, and Santo Domingo North. San Francisco de Macorís, a town hard hit by the coronavirus epidemic, will also have a new mayor, representing the PRM. Nevertheless, the mayor-elect, Siquio Ng de la Rosa tested positive and is said to be recovering from the disease. The cities of San Cristóbal, Puerto Plata, Higüey, Los Alcarrizos, Baní, Bonao and San Pedro de Macorís get a change of political leadership, with mayors now representing the PRM.
