C5i to help with contact tracing to combat Covid-19

The center was built to prevent crime, but now the nation’s leading surveillance system is coming in handy in the war against the coronavirus. President Danilo Medina was present for the inauguration of the Center for Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cybersecurity and Intelligence (C5i) of the Dominican Republic on 22 April 2020. The center is located at the Ministry of Defense on Av. 27 de Febrero in the National District.

The center has state of the art technology to gather information and analyze the data for the development of strategic operations. There are expectations exactly where the outbreaks and clusters of cases occurring in different municipalities will be known for better efforts to avoid the spread of the disease.

The C5i houses the surveillance and early warning systems of the country. These include those of the Armed Forces, the National System of Emergency Attention and Security 911, the Center for Emergency Operations (COE) and other government response institutions.

The Ministry of Defense explains that the new facility enables a transition from manual crisis management with uncertainty to digital and objective management based on the use of big data,

“In real time, it is possible to know the number of beds available and in use, location, ventilators and other information that contributes to better decision-making in the war against the coronavirus and that allows the creation of predictive models to determine cases and the resources that will be needed,” explained the Minister.

The Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Rubén Darío Paulino Sem says that the center is above all a monitoring system that strengthens and makes dynamic the coordination of the joint government operations.

This year, several centers of the same kind were installed in Mexico.
