
Remittances are a top hard currency producer for the Dominican Republic. Hundreds of thousands of Dominican expats religiously send back cash to help their relatives. Now hundreds of thousands of these are expected to be among those who lose their jobs.
The World Bank is forecasting that remittances will drop 20% due to the economic crisis induced by the Covid-19 pandemic and shutdown. This represents a loss of a crucial financial lifeline for many vulnerable households at a time when thousands of people in the Dominican Republic are being furloughed.
