
Santiago’s mayor Abel Martínez began his second term on 24 April 2020. His deputy mayor is engineer Leonela Massiel Espinal Paulino, for the 2020-24 term. The new officials were sworn in by the president of the Santiago Electoral Board, Haime Thomas Frias Carela at the city hall.
Martínez commits to keep working for the welfare of the people of Santiago, the country’s second-largest city.
Martínez won the city government running for the ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) with 51% to 39% of Ulises Rodríguez of the Modern Revolutionary Party. Martínez had backed former President Leonel Fernández in his aspirations to be the presidential candidate of the PLD.
