Dominican ambassador to the United States, politician José Tomás Pérez urges that efforts be made to convince former President Leonel Fernández to give his support to PLD presidential candidate Gonzalo Castillo in the event of a second round vote being needed. Fernández was the president of the ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) until he resigned alleging fraud in the party primary won by Castillo. Fernández split from the party founding the People’s Force to run for the Presidency. The Central Electoral Board (JCE) has rescheduled the presidential and congressional election for 5 July 2020 due to the coronavirus epidemic.
Pérez said that if none of the presidential candidates obtains more than 50% + 1 of the votes cast, and a second round has to be held, Fernández or Gonzalo Castillo of the PLD should support whomever of the two obtains the most votes.
It is in the country’s interest, in this situation of global pandemic, to have a second round agreement between the PLD and Leonel Fernandez’s party, where the one who gets fewer votes supports the one who gets more votes, the ambassador wrote in his Twitter account.
All highly reputed polls forecast that Luis Abinader of the PRM has a comfortable lead over Gonzalo Castillo of the PLD.
