Police commander looks after victim of police brutality

Ney Aldrin Bautista / Hoy

The director-general of the National Police, General Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte has acted vigorously after a video of police brutality against a man looking for food after the curfew in San Francisco de Macoris went viral. First, the officers in the case were removed and demoted. Then the general sent the man food together with medical and psychological assistance.

Garcia Bonilla was forcefully detained last week and held for several hours for violating the curfew law currently in place. He showed the police agents some injuries on his leg, but that did not faze the officers. The latest news is that the man has been taken to the National Police Hospital in Santo Domingo for treatment on orders from the director-general of the Police.

Garcia Bonilla was received at the hospital by the director, Dr. Frank Mena. A full coronel of the National Police, Victor Carrasco, was assigned to escort Garcia Bonilla to the hospital in the capital and ensure his safe return to his home when the medical issues are resolved.

It appears that Garcia presents some ulcerated injuries on his leg that were not related to his arrest. There is an interesting Dominican folk saying that says “nothing bad happens unless something good is coming along” which certainly applies to this case.

Members of the force delivered food and protective equipment to the mother of Victor Manuel Garcia Bonilla at her house in the sector of El Capacito in San Francisco.
