Guillermo Moreno: PLD is politicizing the Covid-19 epidemic

Guillermo Moreno, president of Alianza País, said on Monday, 27 April 2020 that after more than 50 days since the first case of Covid-19 was reported, and more than a month after the declaration of the State of Emergency, there are no signs that the strategy carried out so far by the government is assertive in containing the epidemic in the country.

He said that in countries where there are at least minimal democratic institutions the Presidency and Congress would be integrating all political, economic, social and citizen sectors into the fight against the epidemic, defining an agenda and working towards a shared responsibility strategy.

Guillermo Moreno speculates that the ruling party sees the pandemic as an opportunity to position the ruling party candidate and guarantee the continuity of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD). He said the government’s strategy has been to present itself as a self-sufficient government, which has control of the situation and at the same time distributes medical care, money, food, to gain votes.

He said that the political opposition should not stop demanding that the government adopt the appropriate measures and strategy to flatten the curve of the disease. He called for the Central Electoral Board (JCE) to define, along with political parties, a protocol that gives full security to citizens so that they can go to vote on 5 July without the risk of becoming infected with the virus.
