A local citizen’s group, Santo Domingo en Bici that promotes getting around Santo Domingo on a bicycle has opened talks with the National Institute of Traffic and Land Transportation (Intrant) and the National District Municipality (ADN) to promote the use of the bicycle to get around during the coronavirus quarantine.
Santo Domingo on Bike points out that the bicycle is the ideal means of transportation in these times of the Covid-19 because it is a transport way for individuals that facilitates keeping distance between people and does not pollute the air. Polluted air aggravates the respiratory problems caused by the virus.
Santo Domingo on Bike spokespeople say that already several cities around the world are taking actions to give priority to free bicycle sharing. The organization wants the government to help with a campaign to promote the use of bicycles as a means of transport and to establish temporary pilot bike paths following guidelines foreseen in the National District’s Cycling Safety Action Plan.
Santo Domingo en Bici is a citizen’s group created in March 2018 by people who use the bicycle as a means of transport in the city. Its objective is to carry out actions aimed at getting more citizens to use it for their daily journeys to benefit a more humane and sustainable urban mobility.
In normal days before the epidemic, the bike group would carry out biking excursions in off peak hours taking large groups of people to events and activities around the city.
