
The Minister of Public Health Dr. Rafael Sánchez Cárdenas announced that actions have been stepped up in La Vega to prevent the spread of the coronavirus epidemic. The focus is both on the provincial capital, La Vega and the mountain resort town of Jarabacoa. At the entrance to both cities, military personnel have been stationed with disinfecting equipment for vehicle tires. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defense installed a sanitizing tunnel at the entrance to the emergency room of the Luis Morillo King Public Hospital.
On Friday, 1 May 2020, Dr. Manuel Gil, director of the La Vega public hospital, resigned. The reasons have not been communicated. He was in his second year at the helm of the hospital. On that same day, Public Health Minister Dr. Rafael Sánchez Cárdenas had visited the center to present a two-week containment plan.
In less than a week, the province of La Vega has registered more than 111 new cases for a total of 538 and 10 deaths.
During the visit to La Vega, the public health authorities turned down the setup of a tent-hospital donated by the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM). The health authorities say it would require the installation of air conditioning because of the summer heat.
During his visit to La Vega, Sánchez Cárdenas, toured the isolation center set up in Marena in Jarabacoa. He said it is managed with the same criteria as in other places.
In a press conference on Monday, 4 May 2020, Dr. Sánchez Cárdenas said Greater Santo Domingo is now the focus of Ministry of Public Health efforts to control the virus. Greater Santo Domingo has the most cases. The government has yet to announce new measures to control the virus.
