Hacienda Minister Donald Guerrero says that there will be a gradual opening of the economy starting next week, as there are many sectors that want to return to their economic activities. On Monday, 4 May 2020, Economy Minister Ariel Jiménez had said the government did not yet have a date for opening.
“During this month, an opening of the economy will begin, but not precisely on the 11th,” he stated when interviewed on the Hoy Mismo television talk show.
“And that we can start next week, as soon as possible, within the limits of prudence, to begin the economic reactivation, because I know that there are many Dominicans, many businessmen and many workers, who want to resume their activities,” he said.
He said he is aware that the population is eager for the economy to open now, but he said that the government’s priority is saving lives and the health of the people. He said the opening depends on the number of infected entering a downward trend.
“We have made a lot of progress and I think a major effort has been made; we have reached levels of controls on the epidemic that tell us we are on the right track,” he said.
