
Public Health Minister Rafael Sánchez Cárdenas, said in his 6 May coronavirus press briefing that “the best medicine for the epidemic is keeping physical distance.” He urged people only go out for essential needs. The Dominican public health minister said: “Life after Covid-19 has changed.” The Minister warned that the World Health Organization has said the epidemic “is not a matter of days and we cannot count the days before we will be able to party again,” he said.
According to Coronavirus Bulletin #48 of the Public Health Ministry’s Department of Epidemiology, the Dominican Republic has 8,807 confirmed cases, 327 new confirmed cases and 362 deaths. There are 1,598 patients hospitalized, including 134 in intensive care units.
Bulletin #48 carries statistics up to Tuesday, 5 May 2020 at 6pm. The tally includes only the results from 35,340 PCR diagnostic tests. The results from rapid response blood antibody tests are not included in the statistical report, nor those diagnosed by tomography or other ways. The Dominican Republic has a population of more than 10 million people.
As of Tuesday, 5 May 2020 at 6pm, the most confirmed PCR cases continue to be reported in the National District and Santo Domingo Province (Greater Santo Domingo), Santiago, Duarte (San Francisco de Macorís), La Vega, Puerto Plata, Espaillat (Moca), San Cristóbal, Monseñor Nouel (Bonao) and Sánchez Ramírez (Cotuí).
The largest increases in confirmed cases were reported for the National District (103), Santo Domingo province (70), La Vega (42), Duarte (30), Santiago (29), San Cristóbal (13), La Romana (11), La Altagracia / Higuey, Veron and Punta Cana (7), Sánchez Ramírez / Cotuí (6), Puerto Plata (5), Monseñor Nouel / Bonao (4), Espaillat / Moca (2), San Juan de la Maguana (2). In the other 19 provinces, 1 or no new cases are reported.
According to Bulletin #48, the evolution of the health crisis nationwide is:

Santo Domingo province: 1,810 cases, 70 new cases, 57 deaths
Santiago: 1,000 cases, 29 new cases, 58 deaths
Duarte (San Francisco de Macorís): 680 cases, 30 new cases, 77 deaths, including 1 new death
La Vega: 607 cases, 42 new cases, 19 deaths
San Cristóbal: 327 cases, 13 new cases, 11 deaths
Espaillat (Moca, Gaspar Hernández): 312 cases, 2 new cases, 8 deaths
Puerto Plata: 261 cases, 5 new cases, 18 deaths
Monseñor Nouel (Bonao): 222 cases, 4 new cases, 4 deaths
Hermanas Mirabal / Salcedo: 204 cases, 13 deaths
Sánchez Ramírez (Cotuí): 206 cases, 6 new cases, 6 deaths
La Romana: 190 cases, 4 new cases, 1 death
La Altagracia (Higuey, Verón, Punta Cana): 132 cases, 3 new cases, 1 death

Azua: 86 cases, 4 new cases, 2 deaths
San Juan de la Maguana: 81 cases, 1 new case, 3 deaths
San Pedro de Macorís: 81 cases, 2 new cases, 9 deaths
Peravia: 62 cases, 1 new case, 1 death
Valverde: 55 cases, 17 new cases, 4 deaths
Barahona: 45 cases, 4 new cases, 1 death
Santiago Rodríguez: 38 cases, 5 new cases, 1 death
Montecristi: 27 cases, 9 new cases
Samaná: 25 cases, 1 death
Monte Plata: 23 cases, 1 new case, 6 deaths
San José de Ocoa: 14 cases, 2 deaths
Hato Mayor: 13 cases, 2 deaths
El Seibo: 10 cases
Baoruco: 5 cases
Dajabón: 5 cases
Elías Piña: 5 cases
Pedernales: 4 cases
Independencia: 1 case
Haiti reports 101 confirmed cases and 12 deaths as of 4 May 2020. Public Health Minister Dr. Rafael Sánchez Cárdenas considered cases in Haiti are widely unreported.
In the Americas, the Dominican Republic is ranked 8th in number of confirmed cases after the United States, Brazil, Canada, Peru, Ecuador, Mexico, and Chile.
