Dominican Republic – Coronavirus Covid-19: Bulletin #52/9 May 2020

69 days after the first person tested positive to the disease in the Dominican Republic, the Ministry of Public Health reports reaching the goal of 2,000+ tests per day. In coronavirus bulletins 51 and 52 (Saturday and Sunday), more than 2,000 tests were carried out. As a result, the country’s mortality rate has now for the first time fallen under 4%. The mortality rate as of Bulletin #52 is 3.75%, a new low. The better management of sick patients is also showing in the three new deaths, a significantly lower number of new deaths, according to the Bulletin #52 released on Sunday morning.

According to Coronavirus Bulletin #52 of the Ministry of Public Health’s Department of Epidemiology, the Dominican Republic has 10,347 confirmed cases, 465 new confirmed cases and 388 deaths. There are 1,941 patients hospitalized. The number of hospitalized persons has been gradually increasing, but is still below the hospitalization capacity nationwide. Indeed, several hospitals have reduced their availability for Covid-19 patients.

Bulletin #52 carries statistics as of Saturday, 9 May 2020 at 6pm. The tally includes the results from 42,615 PCR diagnostic tests. The results from rapid response blood antibody tests are not included in the statistical report, or those diagnosed by tomography or other means. The Dominican Republic has a population of more than 10 million people.
As of Saturday, 9 May 2020 at 6pm, the most confirmed PCR cases continue to be reported in the National District and Santo Domingo Province (Greater Santo Domingo), Santiago, Duarte (San Francisco de Macorís), La Vega, San Cristóbal, Espaillat (Moca), Puerto Plata, Monseñor Nouel (Bonao) and La Romana and Sánchez Ramírez (Cotuí) and Hermanas Mirabal, all with 200 or more cases.

The largest increases in confirmed cases were reported for the Santo Domingo province (150), the National District (138), San Cristóbal (47), La Vega (19), Barahona (18), Azua (16), Duarte (16), Santiago (14), La Romana (8), Hermanas Mirabal (8), Espaillat (7), La Altagracia (3), Maria Trinidad Sánchez (3), San Juan de la Maguana (2), San Pedro de Macoris (2),
Peravia (2), Monseñor Nouel / Bonao (2). The number of cases reported for Greater Santo Domingo (National District and Santo Domingo province) are a record high. For the first time in several weeks, there were only 11 provinces where 1 or no new cases were reported.
