The Ministry of Environment issued Resolution #0006/2020 provisionally suspending the cutting and transportation of logs from plantations and forest management plans throughout the country. Environmental groups had criticized the wood was being taken to sawmills and alerted authorities to irregularities.
The Ministry says the resolution is issued during this time of drought.
Resolution # 0006/2020 still authorizes the cutting and transport of Acacía mangium wood that is used as biomass for energy production.
Through the measure, the Vice-Ministry of Forest Resources, the Provincial Environmental Departments and the National Environmental Protection Service (SENPA) are ordered to participate, collaborate and coordinate actions to ensure compliance with the resolution.
