Vice President Margarita Cedeño says it is her responsibility to stay on the job

Vice President Margarita Cedeño who leads the government welfare team says she will not resign from her responsibilities in the Medina Administration’s social cabinet. She said her team leaders are working from home because they are in the 60+ vulnerable age bracket. She stressed the important work the social cabinet is carrying out during the Covid-19 health and economic crisis.

Ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) presidential candidate Gonzalo Castillo is carrying out his campaign distributing supplies to needed communities.

Cedeño is running for Vice President for the ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD). She made the statement when interviewed on “Esta Noche con Mariasela” TV show on government’s efforts to bring relief to Dominicans during the Covid-19 social and economic crisis.

Cedeño is the wife of former President Leonel Fernández. She expressed the certainty that PLD candidate Gonzalo Castillo would win in a first-round and that if a second-round were necessary, her husband would back Castillo. Fernández split from the PLD after denouncing major fraud in the party primary held on 6 October 2019 with the use of automated voting machines. The automating voting machines were subsequently disallowed for use in the presidential and congressional elections.

In the interview on “Esta Noche con Mariasela”, Cedeño gave her opinion that it is unlikely that elections will be able to be held in the United States and Spain. She said that the Constitution and Dominican laws order vote to be cast by persons. She said this is an impediment to the recommendation for Dominicans to vote by mail in the United States made by US legislator Adriano Espaillat. The Central Electoral Board (JCE) has already issued resolutions that overridden constitutional stipulations, including setting new dates for the election. The specific dates are included in the Constitution. Polls show that Dominicans abroad favor opposition candidate Luis Abinader.

The vice-presidential candidate of the opposition Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC), People’s Force (FP) and allied organizations, Sergia Elena Mejía de Séliman, warned that the governing party is using Vice President Margarita Cedeño to make up for the lack of conditions of the PLD presidential candidate. Vice President Cedeño has been addressing the nation recently more and more from the Presidential Palace. In the Dominican Republic most cabinet officers are not authorized to speak to the press, leaving the country with limited communication channels with what the government is doing to combat the present health and economic crisis.

Reports are that the Central Electoral Board (JCE) has notified the US authorities that the Dominican election date has been postponed and requests the authorization of the election.
