New Mayor of the National District, Carolina Mejía announced a joint campaign with the European Union delegation in the Dominican Republic. The “Time for Solidarity” contest also has the backing of the Bellas Artes National Gallery. Adult Dominicans and foreign residents are motivated to participate in an art contest to honor solidarity and the lessons learned during the Covid-19 epidemic.
The works that would be turned into murals need to be deposited at the Galería Nacional de Bellas Artes from 10am to 5pm from 1 to 22 June 2020. The cash prizes are RD$100,000 first prize, RD$75,000 second prize and RD$50,000 third prize. The three winning works will be painted on urban public spaces in the National District. All participating works will be exhibited at the Bellas Artes National Gallery.
“These have been difficult days not only here in our city, but also in the world and in these days of sadness, great ideas like the one proposed to us by the European Union come forth, to show the other face of sadness, that is solidarity. With this objective we are launching today this mural contest “Time for Solidarity”, said the Mayor of the National District.
“Art has the power to make us reflect and it can move us, as in this case, to expressions of solidarity. With this contest we want to share how solidarity has been expressed during the pandemic”, highlighted the ambassador of the European Union in the Dominican Republic, Gianluca Grippa.
