Dr. Adrian Puello named Epidemiology Agency director

Minister of Public Health replaces the director of Epidemiology at the Ministry of Public Health. Farah Peña was removed from her position as director of the National Epidemiology Agency. She continues at the agency, as reported.

36-year old Adrian Puello, an epidemiologist, replaces her. Dr. Puello served as collective health deputy minister. He is a medical graduate from the state university UASD with specialization from the Erasmus University Rotterdam in Holland, UCAM in Murcia, Spain, Université de Bordeaux in France.

On his Linkedin page he reports that he is also research and knowledge management director at the Instituto Nacional del Cancer Rosa Emilio Sanchez; professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the UASD. Until January 2020, he had served as principal investigator telemedicine infections diseases prediagnostic tool for the European Union Monitoring Mission.

In the past he has served as a national consultant for a fact-finding mission of the United Nations into road traffic injuries. He also participated as co-investigator on migration, tourism and the HIV/drug use for Florida International University, and as a pharmacovigilance national consultant for the Pan American Health Organization. Early on in his career, he was chief of the Epidemiology Department at the Hospital General de la Plaza de la Salud for two years and 9 months. He also taught epidemiology and public health at the Unibe university. And he participated as national statistics public health specialist in a National Statistics Office program with the Inter-American Development Bank.

Also appointed is Dr. Belkis Marcelino, an epidemiologist who directed the National Tuberculosis Program at the Mministry.
