According to Coronavirus Bulletin #56 of the Ministry of Public Health’s Department of Epidemiology, the Dominican Republic has 11,320 confirmed cases, 124 new confirmed cases and 422 deaths, including 13 new deaths. There are 1,906 patients hospitalized, including 128 patients in intensive care units.
Bulletin #56 carries statistics as of Wednesday, 13 May 2020 at 6pm. The tally includes the results from 47,774 diagnostic tests, up from 47,117 PCR diagnostic tests the previous day. This is an additional 657 tests, and compares to 1,792 tests carried out on Tuesday, and 1,038 on Monday.
Despite two months of the National State of Emergency, and knowing about the disease since first meetings in January 2020, the Ministry of Public Health says it has not been able to purchase the needed inputs to carry out an adequate amount of PCR tests. Most of the PCR tests are now carried out by private labs, according to the Ministry of Public Health. The statistical report does not include results from rapid response blood antibody tests or patients diagnosed with tomography or other means. The Dominican Republic has a population of more than 10 million people.
