The National Office for Seismic Evaluations (Onesvie) reported an unusual increase in seismic activity in the Dominican Republic, especially in the north and east of the country. The entity reported on 14 May that in the past 24 hours there had been three earthquakes, the largest of 4.4 magnitude at 5:03pm on Thursday, 14 May some 6 km off from Estero Hondo in Puerto Plata at a depth of 10 km. Another for 3.7 magnitude had occurred in La Altagracia province in the East, 16 km from La Otra Banda at a 151 km depth. A third took place at 1:47am with a magnitude of 3.7 some 8 kms from Estero Hondo, Puerto Plata.
The United States Geological Service says that the Dominican Republic has been affected by two earthquakes in the past 24 hours, 7 earthquakes in the past week and 34 earthquakes in the past 30 days.
The Dominican Republic is affected by the major fault system that runs under the island of Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the Lesser Antilles. The country is mainly vulnerable to the Septentrional Fault in northern Hispaniola.
