ANJE campaigns for a presidential debate

The National Association of Young Entrepreneurs (ANJE) has been campaigning for a public debate between the presidential candidates. The organization sucessfully staged a debate among candidates to mayor for the National District with the participation of all candidates. Radhames Martínez Álvarez, president of ANJE, says that the face to face debate has been prepared to comply with international protocols for debates in times of Covid-19.

ANJE’s position is that the holding of electoral debates is more relevant today than ever before, especially in the context of the current pandemic and socioeconomic crisis.

It emphasizes that the social distancing imposed to combat the virus has limited the campaign possibilities. “A televised debate between the presidential and senatorial candidates of the National District is an opportunity for the exchange of ideas that allows voters to be informed about the proposals,” said Martínez Álvarez.

The association will provide details on the holding of the next debates during the coming weeks. ANJE is also organizing debates for the candidates for senator for the National District.

ANJE is giving until 29 May 2020 for the three presidential candidates of parties that received up to 5% of the vote in 2016 to confirm their participation. Publicly, Luis Abinader of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) and Leonel Fernández of the People’s Force (FP) have confirmed. Ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) candidate, Gonzalo Castillo has yet to confirm. The debate is scheduled for 22 June 2020, two weeks before the 5 July 2020 election.
