The original highway between Puerto Plata and Santiago, now known as the Gregorio Luperon Tourist Highway, is finally getting needed asphalt paving. After years of piecework, a kilometer here and a kilometer there, the Ministry of Public Works has moved to ensure that roadway is now about 90% refurbished, weeks before the end of the Medina administration.
According to the latest reports, Ingeniería Estrella is finishing the work, that is expected to be completed in time for President Danilo Medina to cut a ribbon before handing over the presidential band on 16 August 2020.
Right now, the paving is being applied to the road between Gurabo in Santiago and Yásica in the province of Puerto Plata. Another team is preparing the stretch between Yásica and the Gran Parada, on the road between Puerto Plata and Sosúa. Local travelers, residents along the coast, businesses and merchants are quite happy about this positive step.
The road between Santiago and Puerto Plata was originally laid out in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The scenic beauty of the countryside of hills and valleys, together with the small villages along the way, make this a truly tourist route. Over 30 communities are benefiting from the now-usable road, including Pedro Garcia, Lajas, Yaroa, Tubagua and Yásica. Last 17 March, the Minister of Public Works and Communication opened the larger renovated stretch between Navarrete and Puerto Plata.
