The Mayor of Santiago Abel Martínez is taking on the task of operational campaign manager for ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) presidential candidate, Gonzalo Castillo. The ruling party has poured billions into positioning the candidate, but polls say he is not sticking. The campaign is managed by Ruben Jiménez Bichara, who is the executive vice president of the Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE).
The PLD strategists are hopeful they can force a second round. This happens when none of the presidential candidates receives 50%+1 of the vote. Polls show Luis Abinader of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM). Castillo has major drawbacks as a public speaker, and has a background rife with accusations of corruption.
Leonel Fernández, now running for the People’s Force, is also carrying out an aggressive campaign, emphasizing that his government experience is needed in these economic and health crisis days. Fernandez is optimistic if there is a second round, he may be the winner. Fernández is recognized worldwide as a great speaker.
Martinez says that Castillo is the only guarantee that progress made during the governments of President Danilo Medina will not be lost. He says once Castillo assumes the Presidency of the Republic, he will create greater opportunities for all Dominicans.
Martínez replaces Gustavo Canó, a member of the PLD Central Committee of the PLD. Canó is now directing the campaign for Vice President Margarita Cedeño, who is the running mate for Gonzalo Castillo.
A lawyer, Martínez is a member of the PLD Political Committee. He was a deputy to the National Congress for the province of Santiago in 2002-2006, re-elected in 2006-2010 and 2010-2016, and was named president of the Chamber of Deputies for the period 2010-2016.
Abel Martínez was reelected in the 15 March elections for another four years.
