The longtime kingpin of the province of La Altagracia backs Luis Abinader

Amable Aristy Castro, of the Reformist Liberal Party (PRL), says he will back Luis Abinader of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) for President. He had complained that his daughter, Karina Aristy, lost her bid for a fifth term as mayor of Higuey when she did not receive sufficient backing from the ruling party, with whom she was allied for the election. Aristy, who was on the ruling PLD and the PRL municipal tickets, was defeated in Higuey by lawyer Rafael Duluc “Cholitín,” who ran for the PRM and a coalition of nine other political parties.

Amable Aristy Castro was a long-time Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC) politician until he resigned from the PRSC. He now runs for the PRL. Aristy has been elected senator for La Altagracia seven times in a row: 1990, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2016. He is currently seeking to be re-elected for an eighth term as senator.

For many Aristy Castro is the antithesis of the change Luis Abinader has promised in his campaign. Radio morning talk show host, Altagracia Salazar sums up why Abinader may be accepting the backing: “Aristy Castro does not add a vote to Abinader, but he does subtract votes from the PLD.” Abinader seeks to attract thousands to ensure that the PRM takes the election in a first round and does not require alliances to win a second round.
