The Dominican government has restarted work on a project left unfinished for the past 19 years. The job is a rural clinic located in one of the most beautiful places in the entire country: Gurabito de Yaroa, Yasica, just off of the Gregorio Luperon Tourist Highway between Santiago de los Caballeros and the Gran Parada on the highway between Puerto Plata and Sosua. According to local sources, the project was begun by the administration of Hipolito Mejia in 2001, but never completed. If completed, it will ultimately serve over 3,000 people. The police station in the small valley town of Yasica has been rebuilt and is now the pride of the village.
In another move, the Patrimonial Fund from Reformed Companies (Fonper), has undertaken the construction/reconstruction of the police station located at La Cumbre, on the border of Santiago and Puerto Plata provinces on the same tourist highway. This new station has been a demand of residents of the area and police officials for several decades, since the existing structure is wooden and dates back to the Trujillo era. Also, the edifice is situated on an eroding mountainside, noted for its landslides. Once the new station is completed, those arrested will now longer have to be sent to Santiago.
