Cacerolazos return to Santo Domingo

On Saturday, 13 June 2020 from 8 to 8:10pm, residents in middle and upscale neighborhoods in Santo Domingo took to banging pots to protest actions taken by the government and ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD). “Cacelorazos” is a form of popular protest whereby neighbors make noise by banging pots, pans and other utensils to call for attention. The first banging of pots occurred shortly after the 15 March municipal elections were interrupted after the collapse of automated voting system.

This time around the protest was convened by social media by the civic movement “Somos Pueblo” and had the backing of opposition political parties, mainly the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM).

The pot banging is scheduled to take place every Saturday evening, leading to the Sunday, 5 July presidential and congressional election.
