Abinader: It was the government that cleared Yamil Abreu, who is now requested in extradition

The presidential candidate for the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), Luis Abinader, said that it was the government’s Attorney General Office] that issued the certificate of good conduct to former political leader Yamil Abreu Navarro, who is accused of being a leader of a criminal organization linked to the Sinaloa Cartel. Abreu is requested in extradition by the United States government.

Last week the National Drug Control Agency (DNCD) accused Abreu Navarro of alleged drug trafficking in New York at least in 2002. He also is linked to the death of Robinson Jean Carlos de los Santos (Pulli), 35, on 13 September 2018. Last Friday, the second criminal chamber of the Supreme Court postponed coercive measures against Abreu Navarro, who is wanted for extradition by the US Eastern District Court of New York. The hearing against the former director of the Las Lagunas Municipal Board in Azua will be this Friday, 19 June 19.

In an interview for the radio talk show, Cuentas Claras, produced by the journalist José P. Monegro and broadcast on La Nota Diferente, Abinader said that the government is to blame for issuing the certificate and not revealing at that time the individual’s ties to drug trafficking. Abinader said that the party did not have the capacity to background check its members. He said that there are 1.6 million registered members of the party. He said each person is individually accountable. “We asked the pre-candidates for an anti-doping test and a certificate of good conduct,” explained Abinader.

He said the government should investigate cases such as that of capo César Emilio Peralta (César El Abusador). “If there is anyone who has to worry about their inaction and failure in the fight against drug trafficking, it is the PLD government, because you imagine having César El Abusador protected here for ten years… And who was protecting César El Abusador, that is what they have to investigate here,” said the presidential candidate.
