
Rafael Smith, operations director for Punta Cana International Airport, says 21 airlines have programmed flights to Punta Cana starting in July. Airports are closed through 30 June, but the government has yet to authorize the reopening on 1 July.
Airlines have scheduled 508 flights into the airport for July, Smith told El Dia. These flights will bring around 150 to 180 passengers each. He estimates this could mean over 75,000 tourists for Punta Cana resorts. According to the government reopening plan, hotels are authorized to open as of 1 July.
Punta Cana International would be receiving tourists from Belgium, Canada, France, Netherlands, Panama, Portugal, Puerto Rico Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States, and Spain, among other countries.
Airlines that have announced resumption of their operations to PUJ are: Jet Blue, United, Spirit, Suncountry (USA); Air Transat, Air Canada Roug, West Jet Airlines (Canada); Edelweiss Air (Switzerland), Condor, Tuifly (Germany); and Copa Airlines (Panama), among others.
Punta Cana International Airport says the increase in flights is gradual. According to its flight programming, for the first week of the reopening (1-5 July), 50 flights will be received. From 6 to 12 July, 107; from 13-19 July, 116 and from 20 to 26 July 118.
