Reinaldo Pared Perez vs Rafael Paz

The secretary general of the PLD and senator for the National District for the ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) Reinaldo Pared Perez had been keeping pretty much to himself, as he recovers from cancer. Yet he was bothered enough to tweet to correct the PLD senate candidate Rafael Paz. Paz had promised to pass the violence against women bill that he says is “stuck” in the Senate. Pared Perez was prompt to explain that the bill passed several times in the Senate but could not get the votes to pass in the Chamber of Deputies. He recommended that before criticizing the legislators, Paz “be more precise.”

Paz has campaigned to say that when he is voted senator, the Senate would commit to achieving more opportunities for women in the National District, seeking to strengthen and enforce justice in domestic violence cases.

Paz has criticized his competitor Faride Raful, for having little to show for her term in Congress. Faride Raful, now running for senator for the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) is a strong advocate of women’s rights. In the tweeter feed, Faride Raful defenders argue there was little that Raful could do because the ruling political party, the PLD, is majority in the Chamber of Deputies and did not vote in favor of the bill. Polls show Raful is likely to take the election.
