Dominican Republic – Coronavirus Covid-19: Bulletin #90/16 June 2020

According to Coronavirus Bulletin #90 of the Ministry of Public Health’s Department of Epidemiology, the Dominican Republic has 24,105 confirmed cases, 419 new confirmed cases from 114,535 PCR diagnostic tests.

The tally of deaths is 633, including 18 new registered deaths. During the Wednesday, 17 June 2020 press briefing, Public Health Minister Rafael Sánchez Cárdenas admitted that several clinics and hospitals are late in reporting deaths. This can explain sudden surges in fatalities that do not necessarily reflect recent outbreaks or spikes, but rather late reporting.

The Public Health Minister said that statistics are flawed because some epidemiological centers take up to three months to report the data. In an interview televised on Monday, 15 June 2020, investigative journalist Alicia Ortega had asked Dr. Rafael Sánchez Cárdenas to speak to claims the government is manipulating the statistics for political reasons. Instead, Dr. Sánchez Cárdenas blamed the clinics and hospitals for the delays in reporting.

As of Bulletin #90, 2,687 patients are hospitalized, down from 2,753 patients the previous day. Of these, 137 patients are in intensive care units, down from 145 the previous day.
