Citizen Participation: Political parties need to follow the money trail of their members

The general coordinator of Citizen Participation, Sonia Díaz, called on the political parties to investigate their members and the donations they receive that may come from illicit activities, including drug trafficking. “This is an issue for the parties. They have to be transparent about the donations they receive and also investigate their members,” she said. She said that when the cases are analyzed, it is apparent that the drug capos have infiltrated the political parties and the government structures. Diaz made the statements when interviewed by Hector Herrera Cabral for D’Agenda on Channel 11.

The case of drug trafficking in politics is again making headlines after the ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) accuses the leading opposition party (the Modern Revolutionary Party – PRM) of backing a man who is sought in extradition by the United States for drug trafficking.

The PRM has responded they do not have the intelligence structure to investigate their 1.6 members, and the accused, Yamil Abreu, had presented a certificate of good conduct from the Attorney General Office. The PRM also says that the man is sought in extradition for actions that occurred when he was a member of the PLD, and acted as a mayor in the small town of Las Lagunas, Padre las Casas. Abreu would later switch to the PRM.

Diaz says that when a political organization sees that a member has generous resources, the party should investigate this.

The PLD accuses the PRM of backing several members running for office nationwide who have ties to drug trafficking.
