Intrant installs sensors to improve traffic light operation

The National Institute of Traffic and Ground Transportation (Intrant) announced it has installed cameras with sensors to improve traffic lights’ operation, as reported in El Nacional.

The agency reported that the city’s traffic light network is currently being modernized with the installation of the new devices for better traffic management in Greater Santo Domingo. The action is part of the project to expand the traffic light network within the GSD’s Urban Mobility Plan.

“The new system has cameras for the visual detection of vehicles, which will automatically manage the green light times of the traffic lights depending on the length of the queue in transit,” said Claudia Franchesca De los Santos, executive director of the entity.

The Intrant director explained the cameras will also collect traffic data for improvement in intersection controls. She said new traffic lights are being installed on the 30 de Mayo, Jacobo Majluta, Winston Churchill, Independencia, Isabela Aguiar and Abraham Lincoln avenues.
