Miriam Germán impeded to protest in front of the JCE

Former Supreme Court of Justice judge Miriam Germán Brito protested on Sunday, 21 June 2020 in front of the Plaza de la Bandera. The Plaza de la Bandera is located in front of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) and the Ministry of Defense. The Plaza de la Bandera was the center of mass spontaneous protests of young people in February after the cancellation of the municipal elections. The military have impeded new congregations at the site, arguing agglomerations are banned because of the Covid-19.

The judge was able to make a short speech before military obliged her to leave. She demanded that the government respect people’s right to vote in the 5 July 2020 presidential and congressional elections. She said it is a sovereign decision of each Dominican to take the risk and vote in the Covid-19 election. She said this is a right “no public power can limit or prevent.”

“We are aware that the right to elect our rulers is the only guarantee to live in a democratic society. To this end, we recognize and value the blood of men and women who have sacrificed themselves to give us that right,” she said. She announced her “irrevocable” participation in the presidential elections.
