Eduardo Estrella: ITBIS tax should be 10%

Opposition candidate to senator for Santiago, engineer Eduardo Estrella says he favors a drastic reduction in taxes. He said he would favor a reduction of the value-added tax, the local consumer tax to 10%, down from 18%. “This would stimulate consumption and there would be less tax evasion,” he said. “In the end, the government will collect more taxes,” he said. He stressed the plan is to make taxes more transparent.

This would be the second time Estrella is a legislator. He recalled that in 1997, he submitted a bill that considerably reduced taxes on airline fares. He said what he wanted to avoid was that people were splitting their fares and purchasing the larger portion abroad. This was killing the travel agent business in the country.

Eduardo Estrella is running for Dominicanos por el Cambio, in a coalition with the leading opposition party, the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM). Estrella says polls show he is the candidate to beat, with 57% popularity. His main contender is Julio Cesar Valentin, the ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) candidate, who is the incumbent senator for the province of Santiago.
