Opposition party deputy accused of ties to drug trafficking

She was running for a deputy position in Congress for La Vega province in the 5 July 2020 presidential and congressional election. But on Monday, 29 June, state prosecutors announced the arrest of Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) candidate to deputy for La Vega Rosa Amalia Pilarte López. Preliminary reports are that she is arrested on accusations of irregularities in financial transactions for RD$2.5 billion and of being part of a drug trafficking network. The network allegedly is head by her husband, Miguel Arturo López Florencio (Miky Lopez), and their mutual son José Miguel López Pilarte, who is a La Vega city councilor. The three were arrested. The prosecutors have 48-hours to present the formal accusations against them.

During the arrest, the prosecutors reporting the seizure of several luxury vehicles, including two Porsches, one McLaren and two Ferraris. Also seized are two helicopters.

The news was released to the press by the Attorney General Office, through the La Vega prosecutor, Aura Luz García Martínez. The press release says that the drug trafficking and money laundering ring moved upwards of RD$7 billion through the banking system in recent years.

The president of the PRM, Jose Ignacio Paliza said the arrests now are part of the “desperate actions” of the government in its last efforts to defeat the opposition party in the election. Paliza said that each citizen is responsible for his or her actions. He said that this is a case that should be handled by the justice and authorities. Of the individuals, two were in the Police ranks.
