The administrator of the Dr. Francisco Moscoso Puello public hospital, Gelpi Polanco Gómez, was sentenced to three months of preventive custody for his involvement in the shooting of Julio Pérez Valdez on 5 July 2020. Pérez Valdez was the first and only fatality during the past presidential and congressional election. Another three persons were injured. Polanco Gómez is being sent to the La Victoria jail.
The prosecution says there is sufficient evidence to demonstrate Polanco Gómez’s involvement in the shooting at the high school in the Simon Bolivar sector on election day.
Polanco Gómez is accused of operating in association with his security guard, the fugitive Andy Sánchez Doñe, who is said to have fired the shots. The investigation ascertained that the unfortunate event occurred after a conflict between the accused Polanco Gómez and another victim in the incident, Jean Luis González, who suffered a bullet wound.
It is reported that a few weeks before the incident, the detainee agreed with González to send his people to vote and then pay each of them for their votes, but when he claimed the payment, the aggressor refused to pay him.
It was under these circumstances, the file indicates, that the accused pushed the victim González, indicating to his security that they should shoot them. As per the file, the fugitive Sánchez Doñé proceeded to take his firearm with which he fired approximately 19 shots indiscriminately, in the direction of where Gonzalez Diaz was, while with the other hand he took the accused and took him away from the place, to begin his escape immediately.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office is accusing Polanco Gómez of the association of criminals, homicide, murder, attempted murder and the illegal use of firearms.
The authorities say that they will continue to expand the investigations into the case and prosecute all those involved to ensure that they receive the appropriate penalties established by law.
