It’s official: Luis Abinader and Raquel Peña; Hostal Nicolas de Ovando is transition seat of government

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) declared on 14 July 2020 that Luis Abinader and Raquel Peña of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) are the winners of the presidential level election. The final vote tally is 2,154,866 votes for 52.52%. They will receive their win certificates on Wednesday, 15 July in a ceremony at the JCE headquarters.

President-elect Luis Abinader and his transition team have turned the Hodelpa-operated Hostal Nicolas de Ovando in the Colonial City into his pre-government seat. With tourism down to a minimum, the President-elect is taking advantage of the majestic settings of the 15th Century palace to receive visitors and hold meetings. Listin Diario points to the symbolic importance of the palace, which served as the home for the first Spanish governor of the island and from where government was exercised more than 500 years ago.

The President-elect announced that the commissions are working in the hotel and press briefings will be held with details of interest to citizens in general.

President-elect Luis Abinader received 52.5% of the vote in the vote in the 5 July election. He defeated Gonzalo Castillo of the ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), who obtained 37%. His inauguration is scheduled for 16 August.
