
The Dominican Republic’s Professional Baseball League (Lidom) announced that it has reached a final agreement with the National Federation of Professional Baseball Players (Fenapepro) to establish free agency in the local fall/winter baseball league. The free agency protocol would go into effect in time for the 2022-23 championship.
The representatives of Lidom and Fenapepro are confident they could be signing a new general agreement between both institutions in the coming days.
“This free agency agreement with Fenapepro is an important step for the benefit of our players and of baseball in general,” said Vitelio Mejiía Ortiz, president of Lidom. “With this initial agreement, our players, the teams and all the fans of our game win”, declared Erick Almonte, president of Fenapepro.
Lidom’s Technical Commission was made up of Winston Chilote Llenas, Valentín Contreras, Jorge Torres, Francisco Micheli, José Gómez and Carlos José Lugo. While the Technical Commission representing Fenapepro was integrated by its president, Erick Almonte, Vian Araújo, Félix Luzón, Quilvio Veras and Esteban Germán.
Vitelio Mejia also announced that six professional teams will join other franchises for a 12-team league in time for next year’s Summer League Professional Tournament. The organization of the summer league is under Winston (Chilote) Llenas of the Aguilas Cibaeñas. There are talks about creating new baseball franchises in the provinces of San Jose de Ocoa, San Juan de la Maguana, Montecristi, Peravia and Santo Domingo East. These would join the long-standing teams — Leones del Escogido, Tigres del Licey (in Santo Domingo) Aguilas Cibaeñas (Santiago), Estrellas Orientales (San Pedro de Macoris), Gigantes del Cibao (San Francisco de Macoris) and Toros del Este (La Romana).
