A legend in Dominican music, singer-composer Luis Victor Rojas (Victor Víctor) passed away on Thursday, 16 July 2020 at the intensive care unit for Covid-19 at Plaza de la Salud in Santo Domingo. He had had four heart bypass operations, was obese, had diabetes, which reduced his body’s ability to fight the virus. His wife, Sobeida, also tested positive, but is now recovering at home.
Since the news was known on Thursday, the nation is mourning Victor Victor. He was known for being a mentor to hundreds of new generation singers, composers and musicians. He is recognized for his leadership in making “bachata” an interntionally-recognized music. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) named “bachata” an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2019.
